Sierra Leone
The small West African country still suffers from years of civil war. Although peace and security have returned and although two consecutive orderly presidential and parliamentary elections took place, poverty is still an issue. The country is still one of the poorest in the world and is unable to provide nationwide infrastructure and a comprehensive health care by itself. Malnourishment, widespread diseases and injuries sustained from war alongside a shortage of medical personal further burden the development of the country.
We, the Homeopaths without Borders (HOG) have been asked by the Sierra-Leonese Ministry of Health, with the help of our partner organisation Verein Sierra Leone Baden Württemberg e.V (EAFA), to train medical staff in the rural areas in classic Homeopathy. Our common goal is to provide the help to self-help in order to strengthen long-term sustainability. In order to gain a first assessment of the local situation, the HOG will travel to Sierra Leone in May 2010. There we will visit the rural district of Bombali, near the city of Makeni. In November 2010, we will start with the actual training of a group of 25 already well prepared medical students in Homeopathy. The course will be divided in a theoretical and a practical part, in which the students will apply their learned skills on local patients.Beginning of April 2011, shortly before the start of the rainy season, we will begin with the second bloc. A third course in November is already being planned. The Ministry of Health in Sierra Leone fully supports us in our work and has requested further missions.
